Noisy Road Traffic Raises Blood Pressure
Living next to a noisy road can increase the risk of high blood pressure, a recent study has confirmed. The amount of noise coming from traffic directly corresponded with an increasing chance to develop hypertension.
The study involved data from over 240,000 people who had normal blood pressure at baseline. It built off previous research showing that living near a busy road contributes to high blood pressure, but sought to determine whether it was air pollution or noise from the road that played a bigger role.
“Road traffic noise and traffic-related air pollution coexist around us,” said Jing Huang, a lead study author. “It is essential to explore the independent effects of road traffic noise, rather than the total environment.”
Based on their findings, the researchers recommend modifying noise from road traffic at “individual and societal levels”. For individuals, this could mean installing soundproof barriers indoors and/or using running water and shrubs outdoors to cut down on the noise.
Flavanol-Rich Foods Key to Healthy Aging
A higher intake of foods containing flavonols— a specific type of flavonoid antioxidant— is associated with a lower risk of developing frailty, according to recent research. One specific flavonol known as quercetin was identified as being the most beneficial for preventing frailty.
Frailty, which is typically defined as weakness, delicateness, or infirmity, is a common condition in older adults that puts them at greater risk of falls, fractures, disability, and hospitalization.
The study collected data over a period of 12-13 years from participants who were an average age of 58 at baseline. Their findings showed that every 10 mg of flavonols consumed per day was linked to a 20% lower risk of becoming frail.
Flavonols are naturally found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, including leafy vegetables, apples, onions, broccoli, and berries. Foods that are particularly rich in quercetin include red onions, cherries and berries, grapes, green and black tea, cruciferous veggies, and tomatoes.
